This special seminar series focuses on the philosophical and theological foundations of reading a church building in light of its art and architecture. How do we read a church building and rationally argue that it is objectively beautiful? As we study the teleology of art and architecture, we come to a deeper appreciation of God's presence communicated in the church through which we worship Him.

Francis Yi Ui-song’s clan originated in Jeonju and his adult name was ‘Yeo-jang’. He was born to a noble family in Sincheon. He was kind, gentle and warm-hearted by nature. He got married and had two sons and one daughter. After he lost his wife, Francis remarried Mary Kim Ippeun who was a widow living in Seoheung. His wife Mary and his second son Peter Yi Bung-ik died as martyrs in 1866 along with him. Francis was a doctor living in his hometown. Later, he moved to Baecheon and lived there.

Around 1857, he again moved to Chadong, Seoul (so called Suretgol, now Uijuro and Sunhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul) with his wife Mary, his second son Peter, and his daughter Barbara. Two years later, he met Mark Jeong Ui-bae, the catechist who lived outside the Small West Gate in Seoul, and he learned the Catechism. He came back home and taught the Catechism to his wife and children. Then, he was baptized by Bishop S. Berneux (Siméon Jang) in 1862 along with his family.

He led a life of faith diligently while acquiring and carrying religious books, a rosary, a crucifix, and so on. He also provided his house to be used as a mission station for the faithful so that they were able to receive the Sacraments. He cured many sick people, and made efforts to encourage non-believers to become Catholic. Furthermore, he preached the gospel in more than 12 districts while going around Hwanghae-do region with Matthew Yi Deok-bo.

When the Byeongin Persecution of 1866 broke out, Francis Yi Ui-song fled to Sincheon, Hwanghae-do with his family. Then, he came back to Seoul and stayed at the house of his elder brother who was a non-Catholic. He fled again along with his wife Mary and his son Peter to the house of a brother of Peter’s wife, Yi Yeong-taek, who lived in Bongcheon, Siheung (present-day Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul). However, the police interrogated his elder brother and found out the whereabouts of his family. Eventually, he was arrested at Bongcheon along with his wife and son, and he was transferred to the right-hand bureau of the Police Headquarters.
Francis witnessed to his faith firmly during interrogation and torture at the Police Headquarters and encouraged his wife and son several times by saying “Control your mind and do not make a mistake.”

Finally, he was taken to the execution ground of Yanghwajin on October 23, 1866 (September 15 by the lunar calendar) along with his wife and son, and died a martyr by beheading. His severed head was put on display on the military camp’s gate.

Francis Yi was 45 years old when he was martyred. His final statement in the interrogation at the Police Headquarters was as follows:

“I have believed in Catholicism and practiced Catholic teaching for several years. How can I abandon it now?”
