손경서(孫敬瑞) 안드레아는 어려서부터 부모에게 교리를 배웠고 그의 집안에서는 1866년 이후에 많은 순교자가 탄생하였다. 부요한 집안에서 태어난 안드레아는 성품이 너그러운 데다가 효성이 지극하여 부모님의 뜻을 어기지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 식사를 손수 장만하여 부모님께 드리곤 하였다. 혼인한 뒤에는 한 번도 아내와 다툰 일이 없을 정도로 집안을 화목하게 이끌었으며, 자녀와 하인들에게 모범을 보여 주었고, 어려운 사람들을 많이 도와주었다. 사업에 능숙하였던 그는 친척과 친구 일까지도 보살펴 주곤 하였다. 그러나 이러한 세속 상황 때문에 온전하게 교리를 실천할 수는 없었다.
그러다가 시간이 지나면서 안드레아는 교회의 본분을 깨닫고 가족들에게 열심히 교리를 가르쳤으며, 교회 일을 돕거나 이웃에 교리를 전하는 데 노력하기 시작하였다. 청주 출신 송구현(宋龜賢, 도미니코)에게 교리를 가르쳐 준 것도 이때였다. 또 1834년 중국인 유방제(劉方濟, 파치피코) 신부가 입국한 뒤에는 그를 도와 교회에 봉사했으며, 프랑스 선교사 모방(P. Maubant, 羅 베드로) 신부를 모셔다 가족들과 함께 성사를 받기도 하였다.
1838년에 안드레아는 가족과 함께 체포되었으나 겉으로 배교하고 속량금을 낸 뒤 석방되었다. 그러나 집에 돌아오자마자 자신의 잘못을 뉘우치고 열심히 교리를 실천하였다. 또 1839년의 기해박해가 발생하자, 그는 자신의 잘못을 보속하기 위해 앵베르(L. Imbert, 范 라우렌시오) 주교를 위하여 안전한 피난처를 마련할 계획을 세웠다.
이때 손경서 안드레아는 처남 정화경(안드레아)과 함께 수원 상귀(일명 상구, 상게)라는 곳에 거처를 마련한 뒤 가족들을 데리고 이곳으로 이주하였고, 곧바로 앵베르 주교를 서울에서 모셔와 이곳에 머물게 하였다. 그런 다음 주교의 명에 따라 모방 신부와 샤스탕(J. Chastan, 丁 야고보) 신부를 모셔오기 위해 신부들이 있는 곳으로 출발했는데, 앵베르 주교는 안드레아가 집을 떠난 뒤인 8월 초에 밀고자의 책략으로 포교에게 자수하지 않으면 안 되었다.
집으로 돌아온 손경서 안드레아는 아내와 자녀들을 데리고 다른 곳으로 피신하였다. 그러자 포교들은 남은 가족들에게 책임을 씌워 그들의 재산을 빼앗고 고문하였다. 이 사실을 알게 된 그는 모든 것이 자신 때문에 일어난 일이라고 생각하여 포교들에게 자수하였다.
안드레아는 이내 서울로 압송되어 혹독한 문초와 형벌을 받아야만 하였다. 이때 그에게 가해진 형벌을 얼마나 혹독했던지 그는 이를 당해내지 못하고, 또 삶에 대한 약간의 애착 때문에 배교하고 말았다. 하지만 정신을 차린 그는 자신의 죄를 뉘우치면서 이전의 배교를 취소하였다. 그런 다음 1839년 12월 26일(음력 11월 21일)에 교수형으로 순교하였으니, 당시 그의 나이 40세였다.
Andrew Son Gyeong-seo’s clan originated in Milyang and his given name as listed in the family record was ‘Gyeong-gyu’. He was born in Sinri, Hongju, Chungcheong-do (present-day Sin-ri, Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungnam) as the only son of Son Hu-dae among one son and two daughters. Early on his family accepted the Catholic faith. Therefore, Andrew also learned the catechism from his parents at an early age. Saint Thomas Son Ja-seon who died a martyr in Gongju, Chungcheong-do in 1866 was the son of his male cousin. Paul Son Ja-jung who was martyred in Seoul in 1868 was his son. Philip Son Yeo-hoe and Philip Son Yeo-il were his grandsons. In addition to them, his family produced many martyrs after 1866.
Andrew was born to a wealthy family. He was generous and extremely devoted to his parents. He did not go against his parents’ wishes but used to prepare meals for his parents by himself. He lived happily with his family and he had never quarreled with his wife since their marriage. He set an example to his children and servants. He helped poor people very much. As he was good at business, he used to lend a helping hand even to relatives and friends. However, he could not wholly practice Catholic teaching because of such secular circumstances.
Then over time, Andrew realized the duties of the Church, taught his family members the catechism diligently, and started to assist the Church and to preach the Gospel to his neighbors. It was at this juncture that he taught the catechism to Dominic Song Gu-hyeon from Cheongju. After the Chinese priest Father Pacificus Yu Pang-je entered to Korea in 1834, Andrew served the Church by assisting Father Pacificus. Andrew also received the Sacraments from the missionary priest Father P. Maubant (Peter Ra) along with his family members.
Andrew was arrested along with his family members in 1838, but he was released after he apostatized outwardly and a ransom was paid. Upon returning home, however, he regretted his mistake and practiced Catholic teaching diligently. When the Gihae Persecution broke out in 1839, he planned to prepare a safe haven for Bishop L. Imbert (Lawrence Beom) in order to do penance for his past sins.
At that time, Andrew Son Gyeong-seo arranged a place to stay in Sanggwi (so called Sanggu or Sangge), Suwon along with his wife’s brother Andrew Jeong Hwa-gyeong, and he moved there with his family. He soon brought Bishop Imbert from Seoul to the place. Then at the behest of Bishop Imbert he left for the place where Father P. Maubant and Father J. Chastan (James Jeong) stayed in order to bring them to Sanggwi. However, Bishop Imbert had to give himself up to the police at the beginning of August by a trick of the police informer after Andrew had left.
